JL’s Wedding Trend Predictions for 2019

While December tends to be quieter for the wedding industry – which is a shame as I love gorgeous winter weddings for their deep rouge colour palettes and touches of festive magic – I’ve been busy looking ahead to the New Year and wanted to share my eight trend predictions for couples getting married in 2019. Grab a cuppa and if you have any ideas or comments, I’d love to hear them!

1. Unplugged Ceremonies

More than ever before, we are attached to our phones and gadgets, but after months of planning and endless thought going into the finer details, I’m predicting more couples asking for ‘unplugged ceremonies’.

Picture this: you’ve picked your flowers for their colours and scent, you’ve picked the music for the lyrics and melody, you’ve picked your vows because the words mean so much to you.

By encouraging guests to put away their devices, it allows them to focus on you, use all of their senses and be fully immersed in the moment of your special day. Reassure guests that your photographer will capture it and let them know that their job is simply to sit back and enjoy.

 2. Shorter Engagements

As a society, we’re getting used to having anything we need in an instant. Historically, we’ve seen a lot of couples enjoy a bit of respite after announcing their engagement, but I think this is going to change.

While there’s a matter of saving to do, I’m predicting engaged couples will want to speed up the planning process to get married as soon as financially possible – and hiring the services of a wedding planner can certainly help in achieving this! If this is something you’re interested in, you can view the packages that I offer here.

 3. Bold Colours

Over the last few years, I’ve adored seeing the pastel pinks, mint greens and all ivory weddings. However, for 2019 I’m predicting the return of bold colours for couples who want to make a statement and have a burst of colour on their special day.

From bridesmaid dresses to table linens, I think we’ll see a rise in plum and burgundy for a style that’s rich, opulent and utterly beautiful in photography. If this sounds like your cup of tea, think about beautiful crimson Dahlias for your flower arrangements.

4. Elegant, Classic & Modern Fusion

In 2019, I think we will see couples emulating the elegant simplicity with contemporary touches that we saw and Harry and Meghan’s stunning wedding. As a couple, they embody modernity for the Royal family. In their style, they are all about stunning simplicity. Combining these together, the visual styling on their wedding day was breath-taking.

From their sumptuous floral arrangements, their classical and soul music fusion, her Givenchy dress with statement veil: everything they chose was classic, elegant and with a modern twist. I predict a lot of couples will take inspiration from this and look to emulate this fusion on their wedding day.

5. Two Dresses or Two ‘Looks’

Why have one look when you can have two? There is a distinct difference between the ‘day’ and ‘evening’ parts of your wedding, so I’m predicting that more brides will opt to use their dress budget to have two distinct looks for their big day.

Whether that’s fully changing from a princess gown to a fit and flare dress, or whether it’s a dress that has a detachable train, or whether its choosing a statement bolero for the evening, I predict more brides will want to make the most of their day and photo opportunities by having two distinct looks.

6. Statement Cakes

In the past, the cake was unquestionably the pièce de résistance for offering guests a sweet treat, but recently, we’ve seen playful and creative variations that are competing for the limelight.

While our older family members may love a traditional fruit cake (and insist on a tier being frozen for the celebration of a future baby), I’m predicting an upward trend in couples opting for bigger, bolder, more dramatic and colourful cakes which form a visual centrepiece.

I think this is especially the case for couples opting for an ‘all about the fun’ style wedding – you can check this previous blog about discovering your wedding day style.

7. Grazing Tables

Whilst grazing tables have been around for a little while now, I predict that they will only get bigger, better and more extravagant in 2019.

Gone are the days of the boring buffet table filled with cold party food… think fresh, decadent, luxurious food combined with exquiste styling equals a grazing masterpiece. If you are still not sure what I mean check out The Grazing Sisters on Instagram, Kalm Kitchen or Grape and Fig.

I’m a big fan of the supplier KalmKitchen who created this stunning display above.

8. Finally, Interactive Weddings

My final prediction (like the grazing stations), is that more couples will want to show their creativity and personality in interactive stations. Why? Because they create pops of delight and wonder for your guests throughout your special day, and if you’re opting for a traditional, formal or classic wedding day overall, these little touches contrast beautifully to convey the lighter parts of your personality.

So, alongside lots of traditional lawn games, I think we’ll see the continuation of a modern take on guest books, such as finger-print posters or puzzle pieces, as well interactive selfie mirrors and other fun stations which leave guests and the married couple with fun mementos of their wedding day.
